1988

Collette actually began her career as a singer, making an appearance on the ABC show 'Blah
Blah Blah' in 1988, at the age of 16. On the show she accompanied herself on the piano. Here's
a snippet from "Last Rope with Andrew Denton". Denton hisself was the host of the show at this
time:

Andrew Denton: So you left, and by age 16 you had appeared before an enormous national audience in a show which was just watched across the land on the ABC.

Toni Collette: Here we go. What was it, Andrew?

Andrew Denton: Called 'Blah, Blah, Blah'.

Toni Collette: Who was the host of that show, Andrew?

Andrew Denton: Wait till you see this. This will hurt me more than you. Here is Toni Colette at age 16.

FOOTAGE FROM 'BLAH BLAH BLAH', 1988, WITH A VERY YOUNG ANDREW DENTON AS HOST AND TONI COLLETTE SINGING WITH PIANO ACCOMPANIMENT

Toni Collette: (Sings) # I miss your pathetic little face
# I miss your routines, tired-out feet
# I miss that hopeless little smile,
your underwhelming style
# And the stubble on your chin… #

Toni Collette: Look at us!

LAUGHTER AND APPLAUSE

Toni Collette: Well.

Andrew Denton: At least you didn't have a mullet that could be seen from the moon.

Toni Collette: Looking good.

Andrew Denton: But what an amazing set of pipes, as they say in the trade, at age 16.

Toni Collette: Well, I guess I got into acting through singing.

Andrew Denton: Was that…

Toni Collette: Was that a high point for me?

Andrew Denton: It's all been downhill from there. I mean, 11 people and their dog watched that show. That was your first time on television. Was that a big thing for you?

Toni Collette: Yeah. I was petrified. Absolutely. It was so exciting, though. Um…I remember you gave me a note actually. I was talking about it in the car on the way here. It's so true and it's stuck with me, funnily enough — just wishing me luck on the slippery pole to success. And I just often think it's so true — you never know what's going to go down.

Andrew Denton: That was incredibly nice of me.

Toni Collette: Wasn't it? |
