According to Reuters, Toni Collette will step off the movie set and take to the road next year with an album of "alternative rock, pop" songs. Collette, whose latest film In Her Shoes premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, has been writing songs for years while on movie sets. But she says it was only recently that she felt secure enough to step away from acting and still believe she had a career to come back to. "As kind of freeing as it is to be an actor, it kind of has a predictability about it because I've been doing it since I was 17," she said. "Making music and being in the studio and working with my band was a whole new experience and it just felt quite fantastic." Collette's break from movie-making will see her tour with her band, called Toni Collette and The Finish, which includes her musician husband on drums.

COLLETTE BACKS DOWN ON CALL FOR MULESING BAN
2005-07-18

According to ABC Australia, actress Toni Collette has done a backflip on the issue of mulesing, saying she now has a clearer understanding of the practice. Mulesing is the surgical removal of folds of skin in the breech of sheep as a measure against flystrike. While encouraging the animal protection lobby in their endeavours, the movie star says she now understands there are currently no alternatives available to the industry. Collette wrote to Prime Minister John Howard asking him to ban mulesing of Australian sheep, after information was presented to her by animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Collette has issued a statement that she was lead to understand there were effective and humane alternatives to prevent flystrike, currently available. But since having contact with farming organisations and individual farmers, she says she now understands the complexity of the situation.

COLLETTE WRITES PM HOWARD TO BAN MULESING
2005-07-07

Toni Collette, the Sydney-born actor famous for her roles in such movies as The Sixth Sense, About a Boy, The Hours, and Muriel's Wedding, has sent a letter to Australian Prime Minister John Howard calling for an end to the horrific practices of mulesing (live flaying) and live sheep export. "Mulesing is an unimaginably cruel procedure," writes Collette. "The recent promise to stop mulesing by 2010 is unacceptable, since more humane alternatives to prevent flystrike are available now." Toni goes on to urge the Prime Minister to stop the live export of sheep who are no longer profitable to the Australian merino wool industry. The live-export "death ships" transport more that 6 million sheep to the Middle East and North Africa every year. Conditions on these ships are unimaginably bleak—thousands die en route from disease and starvation, and those who survive the journey have their throats slit while they are still conscious. Toni writes, "I am sure that you do not want Australia to be associated with the image of starving, thirsty, and sick sheep who are sentenced to a painful death on foreign soil."
