INDIE AWARDS SPREAD "SUNSHINE"
Posted: 2006-11-29 |
Little Miss Sunshine just racked up another superlative: most nominated.
The Sundance fave turned sleeper hit received a leading five nominations for the 2007 Independent Spirit Awards, pitting it nod for art-house nod with Half Nelson.
While the darkly comic tale of a dysfunctional family's quest to get their daughter enrolled in the titular pageant is vying for Best Feature against Half Nelson, American Gun, The Dead Girl and Pan's Labyrinth, its most famous faces didn't register in the individual categories.
Steve Carell, Greg Kinnear and Toni Collette came up empty, with the film's only acting nods going to Paul Dano and Alan Arkin, who go head to head in the Best Supporting Male race.
Little Miss Sunshine helmers Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris round out the film's five
nominations with a joint nod for Best Director. Congratulations to Toni for having two ambitious
projects in the Best Film category running!

TONI COMES OF AGE
Posted: 2006-11-20 |
Article courtesy News.com.au:
Toni Collette's latest film project, Hey, Hey It's Esther Blueburger, has begun filming in Adelaide.
The coming-of-age comedy is about a young Jewish girl's adventures as she navigates the pressures of family, school and her impending Bat Mitzvah.
Also starring Whalerider's Keisha Castle-Hughes and Essie Davis, the film will introduce unknown 13-year-old actor Danielle Catanzariti to the big screen.
Catanzariti was picked from 3000 hopefuls to portray Esther in the $6 million film.
Collette, who recently released her debut album, Beautiful Awkward Pictures, plays Mary, the unconventional mother of Esther's best friend Sunni, played by Castle-Hughes.
Catanzariti said she hoped to get some acting tips from critically acclaimed Colette and Castle-Hughes.
"I knew both of them were going to be in it (the film) and that made me more determined to get (the part)," she said recently.
"I am very excited to see them both. I hope to learn about their experiences on what they have done and how they started to learn to act."

COLLETTE TAKES STAGE
Posted: 2006-11-15 |
Article courtesy Sky News Australia:
Toni Collette says she is feeling confident about her singing and now she is working on her
stage persona as she continues to perform her new album. The Oscar-nominated actor released her
much anticipated debut album, Beautiful Awkward Pictures, last month and has been performing
live gigs for the first time. 'The first gig I was completely petrified and I think once I got
that out of the way, I have just been enjoying it', she said. Colette released the album
independently, funding the project herself. Collette played her first ever live music gig at
The Basement in Sydney last week, and will continue to perform around Sydney and Melbourne
until next month. Her biggest show will be at Sydney's Homebake music festival on December 2.

BEAUTIFUL, AWKWARD TONI
Posted: 2006-11-15 |
Article courtesy The Daily Telegraph:
Beautiful and awkward, a nervous Toni Collette charmed a sold-out crowd at her live debut at
The Basement on Thursday night. She's used to treading the red carpet in front of the world's
media, but when it came to launching her elegant pop album, Beautiful Awkward Pictures, the
Hollywood star was shocked by the size of the audience when she took to the stage. "I have
never seen this place so packed; I am s...ting myself,'' she giggled before launching into her
first track, This Moment Is Golden. With her stellar band including husband Dave Galafassi and
Augie March's Glenn Richards, Collette was relaxed enough to not only wow the fans with her
pure voice but enjoy her-self. Also cheering her on were her parents and fellow thespians Dan

NOW MURIEL'S GIGGING
Posted: 2006-11-15 |
Article courtesy The Daily Telegraph:
Toni Collette never wanted to be the crotch-grabbing rock chick when she branched out from
acting - but she can't help it. The acclaimed Aussie screen star yesterday completed another
step in her musical rise, performing with her band The Finish at the Sydney Opera House for an
episode of the Max Sessions concert series on cable network Foxtel. Collette confessed to the
small crowd of about 50 that she couldn't hide her inner rock chick on stage, writes our
reporter at the show, Lucy Howard. "People always asked what I'd be like on stage, and I said
that I'd never grab my crotch like Chrissy Amphlett," Collette said. "That seems to be all
I'm doing."

"TSUNAMI" REVIEW BY THE NEW YORK POST
Posted: 2006-11-14 |
Suddenly, tens of thousands disappeared.
The Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 came out of nowhere, stayed long enough to kill more than 270,000
people in 12 countries, and then receded almost as quickly as it arrived. It is this aftermath
that is the focus of the first TV miniseries to come out of the disaster - HBO's two-part,
three-hour "Tsunami: The Aftermath" - produced in association with the BBC and scheduled to
premiere on consecut-ive Sundays, Dec. 10 and 17, just shy of two years since the story of the
deadly tidal waves transfixed the world smack in the middle of the holidays.

FIRST "THE DEAD GIRL" REVIEW
Posted: 2006-11-08 |
The Hollywood Reporter has a review on "The Dead Girl", which had its world-premiere yesterday
at the AFI Film Fest: By the movie's end, writer-director Karen Moncrieff's "The Dead Girl"
delivers considerable emotional impact. But that doesn't mean you've enjoyed the journey.
Moncrieff chooses to scrutinize highly unpleasant material but, fortunately, she never takes
an exploitative or sensationalistic approach. The movie has its integrity. Her female
characters are deeply troubled individuals, and there is little to comfort viewers that any of
these lives might turn around or improve. Yet Moncrieff views these people, these victims,
with compassionate understanding. Read the complete article

"LIKE MINDS" REVIEW AND NEW PHOTOS
Posted: 2006-11-01 |
Here's a first review on "Like Minds" courtesy InFilm: Every once in a while a great thriller
doubles as an extraordinary character study, and every once in a while a filmmaker can plunge
their audiences so deeply into the recesses of a character's mind that no amount of cold
showers or skin scrubbing can remove the psychological creepy crawlies. If you're not a
little rattled by Alex (Eddie Radmayne) and Nigel (Tom Sturridge), the remorseless private
school protagonists of Australian writer/director Gregory J. Read's bone chilling Like Minds,
it may be time to check your pulse or find the nearest shrink couch to start chatting about
your feelings. Tearing away the insignia of private school education and prying into a
tangled web of iniquitous plots beneath, Reed's thriller is a supremely unnerving
coming-of-age story that delves into some of cinema's darkest no-fly zones. It creates a
psychological stratum that would have Sigmund Freud dripping with sweat and reaching for
Valium. Read the full review
here. Also found a couple of new pictures from the film.
