UPDATES ARCHIVE | JANAURY 2008 "TOWELHEAD" PROVOKES REACTION Posted: 2008-01-29 New review on "Towelhead" after its Sundance Premiere, the full article can be read here: "Towelhead" is a brilliant and often comic depiction of a young girl's awakening to her sexuality, race and power. While some of the material is provocative and graphic (the girl's loss of virginity, which later she identifies as rape), the film is beautifully shot and suspenseful. Set during the first Gulf War, the film is as much about taking sides politically as it is about taking sides on female sexuality. Jasira, the daughter of a white mother and a Lebanese father, is sent at 13 to the Houston suburbs to learn, as her mother says, "what real men are like." Jasira lives with her self-absorbed father and is adrift in a suburban cul de sac. The neighbors represent her choices: a lecherous, married Army reservist who offers Jasira quick access to the adult world through sex, porno mags and Margaritas; the reservist's frigid, clueless wife who offers the girl brief employment as a baby-sitter; and the maternal Toni Collette, who offers Jasira a model of a woman in possession of her mind and body. "Daddy doesn't like bodies," Jasira tells the pregnant Collette in the film's ultimate scene. But the fact that Jasira begins to make conscious choices about what she wants to do with her own body and with whom is the movie's, and the girl's, redemption. The star and her husband, musician Dave Galafassi, welcomed Sage Florence Galafassi on Wednesday, January 9 in Sydney, a spokeswoman for Collette said. It is the couple's first child. "Both mother and baby are very well and very happy," the spokeswoman said. Collette, 35, announced her pregnancy in July, saying she was "completely over the moon". The Sydney-born actress said it was a bit of a case of life imitating art, as she had played pregnant women in her recent films. "It is strange the last three films I've done I have been pregnant," Collette said. "I'm just like, what is the universe trying to tell me? "But I think everything happens when it's meant to." The star of Muriel's Wedding and Little Miss Sunshine will next be seen in the Australian film The Black Balloon.
